Technical translations: essential for engineering and industry
From the factory floor to an optoelectronics conference — technical interpreting from the inside
Technical translation brings user manuals to mind — but most of the real work happens live: at engineering trainings, production line commissionings, quality audits and technical conferences. There, the interpreter has no dictionary and no time to think; you have to understand what the engineer means before the sentence ends. I have interpreted technical subject matter for 13 years — from aerodynamics and optoelectronics to Lean Manufacturing — with written translation of documentation as the complement to that work. Here is what it looks like in practice.
Where does industry actually need an interpreter?
Wherever technical knowledge has to move from one head to another. Typical assignments: operator and maintenance training for a newly installed machine, technology transfer between plants, machine acceptance at the manufacturer's site and at the target plant, quality audits with the foreign headquarters in the room, Lean Manufacturing workshops, industry conferences and new technology presentations.
The common denominator: on both sides stand specialists who know exactly what they are talking about — and they understand each other only through the interpreter. If the interpreter can't keep up with the substance, the knowledge doesn't transfer, even though the training formally took place. That is why preparation, not improvisation, decides the quality of technical interpreting.
Each format calls for a different working mode. At a conference I interpret simultaneously from a booth. At an in-plant training — usually consecutively, or with a portable tour guide system that lets the group hear the interpretation through headsets while walking the shop floor. A practical point for trainings run by machine suppliers: I work Polish–English in both directions, and from German into Polish. If a German trainer delivers the session in English — which is the usual case — I cover the whole event; if the session is in German, I interpret it into Polish, but the group's questions back to the trainer need a different arrangement. Confirm the training language with your supplier early and pass it on when you make the enquiry.
How does an interpreter prepare the terminology for a technical training?
This is the most important and least visible part of the job. A good interpretation of a training on, say, optoelectronic systems doesn't come from linguistic talent — it comes from preparation. It works like this:
First, materials from the client: training presentations, machine documentation, diagrams, process sheets, previous translations if they exist. If the materials are trade secrets, I sign an NDA before receiving them — that is the standard, not the exception.
From the materials I build the assignment glossary: Polish–English term pairs specific to the technology and to the particular plant. The same machine part can have three different names — the catalogue name, the standards name, and the shop-floor name the operators actually use. A good glossary covers all three.
Finally, questions for the client: what will be demonstrated live, which abbreviations will come up, does the trainer have an accent worth listening to in advance. Fifteen minutes with the engineer before the training can save an hour of confusion during it. The earlier I get the materials, the better — a glossary built the night before is always a worse glossary.
The glossary doesn't vanish when the assignment ends. For a training series or a multi-stage rollout, I extend it with every working day, so terminology stays consistent across the whole project — even when months pass between sessions. That is one reason to keep a single interpreter for the entire project rather than sourcing a new one for each stage.
Simultaneous, consecutive, or a tour guide system?
A quick guide: a technical conference with lectures — simultaneous, from a booth, working in a pair with a second interpreter (switching every 20–30 minutes or so). A workshop training for a small group — consecutive, since participants stop at each module anyway. A plant tour, work at the machine, shop-floor noise — a tour guide system: the trainer speaks normally and the group hears the interpretation through headsets without stopping production. The best time to choose the mode is at the planning stage, together with the interpreter — it is a standard part of the quoting conversation.
What separates a technical interpreter from "someone who speaks English"?
A technical interpreter is more than a linguist. Quality comes down to knowledge of the field and its terminology; accuracy and consistency — using the same terms throughout the training and across all documents; and familiarity with industry standards and regulations (e.g. ISO, CE marking), which have fixed wording in both languages.
Live work adds one more requirement: resistance to pace. An engineer running a training doesn't slow down because there's an interpreter in the room. You have to keep up with the substance — and that is only possible when the terminology was mastered before entering the room, not during the session.
What about translating the technical documentation?
Written translation closes the loop on a project: operating and safety manuals, specifications, quality documentation, technical reports. The model that works best is one person handling both the training and the documentation — the assignment glossary then keeps terminology identical in the room and on paper, and the machine operator reads in the manual exactly the terms they heard at the training. A mistranslated safety instruction is a risk of accident and legal liability — accuracy here is not a matter of style.
